Will there be a second season of Tokyo Revengers?

At the time of writing, Liden Films, publisher Kodansha or any other member of the production committee has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. A lot of anime manages to get a season 2 right after the first season finale but unfortunately, Tokyo Revengers wasn’t one of them.

Moreover, anime sometimes can take years to get renew for a new season since the decision depends on various factors. Luckily, it is possible to evaluate whether it will have a new season under some main factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Let’s have a look:

Is there enough material available for Second Season of Tokyo Revengers

The original manga by Wakui is published by Kadokawa under their Weekly Shonen Magazine which first began serialization on March 1, 2017, and so far 24 compiled volumes have been released with a new one releasing every 3-4 months on average. The first season of anime adapted the first 8 volumes and ended on the 73rd chapter titled “A Cry Baby”.

Conclusion: Currently there are 16 volumes of content available to adapt which is more than enough for another 24 episodes seasons. Moreover, the series is still ongoing with the consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Manga Sales

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a manga). Sales generated through the sales of the manga volumes and merch are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally, a 24-episode anime television series usually takes about $ 6,000,000 to produce.

The Tokyo Revengers manga dominated the manga sales chart all year round and was the third-highest selling manga first half of 2021, just behindJujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer. As of the latest, the manga has over 40 million copies in circulation with each volume selling over 1 million copies. The series has received multiple reprints so far but the publisher is still struggling to meet the demands.

On average a manga usually having 2,000,000- 5,000,000 copies in circulation is seen as a good scene, so it is doing well in that regard with such amazing sales numbers.

Blu-ray and BD Disc Sales

Disc sales are an important criterion for anime creators to earn financial income. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 5,000, a second season would be pretty promising.

The Tokyo Revengers Blu-ray/ DVD Discs also is selling amazingly well. The first volume BD which was released in August 2021 sold 2942 copies in its first week. The second BD volume which was released 2 weeks later did much better and sold 3616 copies in the first week. The third volume sold 4292 units and the fourth had the best sale record with over 4,513 copies sold.

A total of 15k units sold with only four volumes released is quite impressive, considering there is also growing streaming and merch money coming from domestic and overseas companies like HiDive, BiliBli, in 2021.

Conclusion: the series certainly has made a lot of money since the anime has debuted, so profitability shouldn’t stand in the way of a sequel either. And I don’t see Kadokawa and the production committee of Tokyo Revengers Season 2 losing money unless the popularity drops for the franchise.

Popularity in Japan and West

The Tokyo Revengers series was already quite popular in Japan and its popularity has exploded after the anime aired. Back in March 2021, the manga had around 8 million copies in circulation. By May 2021 the number almost doubled and reached 15 million copies and just a week later with the release of volume 22 the numbers increased to 17 million copies. On September 26, 2021, it was reported that the manga has reached 40 million copies of circulation.

With this Tokyo, Revengers has become the third highest-selling manga of 2021 so far and the best-selling Kodansha manga within a one-year period by selling 16,532,610 copies and surpassing Attack on Titan’s record of 15,933,801 that was set in 2013.

In 2020 the manga also won the 44th Kodansha Manga Award in Shonen Category.

In Japan, the anime’s debut was one the most-watched show of the Spring 2021 season ranking top on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. On NicoVideo, Japan’s own YouTube and the biggest hosting site, the premiere episode received a total of 14kk views with over 12kk comments.

What to expect from season 2?

The next season will begin with chapter 74 of the ninth volume titled “Get Back” where just before Kisaki shoots Takemichi, the room goes dark, and Takemichi is carried out just before he falls back into unconsciousness.

He wakes up near an underpass, with his gunshot wound wrapped up. In front of him, a man with long, flowing hair stands, who he mistakes for Baji at first. However, the man turns out to be Kazutora, who has been released from prison. Suddenly, Kazutora punches and kicks Takemichi, then tells him that he witnessed a woman being beat on the street, similar to what he just did to Takemichi. He reveals that the men who were beating up the woman were members of Toman, leading him to contemplate what kind of organization Toman had become.
